Thoughts of a City Girl

I was sort of perplexed when I read this news yesterday.

Hmmm - I don't mean to be disrespectful here or anything ... and I'm no rocket scientist, but even I know that something as simple as a pair of gloves left in the front or back seat of my car while I am at work (especially in the cold weather we are having now!) might get me one smashed window.

I'm just sayin' ...

Oh, goodness! And I had imagined those sparkly things all over a bishop's crown were glass! Never thought they were real jewels.

Doesn't it seem strange for a bishop to own anything that expensive in the first place?

It doesn't seem strange or inappropriate to me. We say that priests and bishops are icons of Christ in our midst. So if this is true, and we sing on Saturday nights at Great Vespers, "The Lord is King, he is robed in majesty" - then it actually seems very appropriate for the bishop to have a crown... and any other majestic garments he might wear.

It just seems to me that it might have been also appropriate for this bishop to put his crown (and all of his other valuables) in the trunk of his car.

That's all.

There are, lamentably, scads of examples to suggest the truth of my Grandmother's criticism of many (naive) Christians: "They are so heavenly minded that they're of no earthly good." Now I don't want to draw your full ire, Sister, so I note that I write with tongue in cheek, but also noting that if the shoe fits ... .

Ha! My mom used to say that, too (it was her fear for me, I think, when I wanted to talk about church with her).

The shoe fits absolutely splendidly.

(I thought I read somewhere that this bishop is a former U.S. Marine. Somehow in my mind, that just doesn't go hand-in-hand with naivete. But that's probably just me...)
